Full description
You will be picked up at 3:00 pm from your hotel in Siem Reap, then we'll go directly to the Kampong Phluk, flooded & fishing village of Tonle Sap Lake, located just 21 kilometers from Siem Reap town.
Once in the lake port, we'll take a local boat from the ferry to explore the famous floating villages of Kampong Phluk. There, you can see firsthand what everyday life is like for the many families who make their living primarily from fishing. Most families live on the lake shore in brightly colored houses on long poles, so the high-water levels are not a problem during the rainy season.
Explore the flooded mangrove forest surrounding the area, which is home to a variety of species, including crab-eating macaques and 3,000 inhabitants. We will then take you to visit a Buddhist monastery built on an artificial island and enjoy seeing the sunset from a local boat on Tonle Sap Lake. Then take you back to your hotel in Siem Reap city.

Kampong Phluk Floating village:
At Kampong Phluk, the majority of the homes in these villages are built on stilts.
The village’s name translates to “harbor of the tusks,” referring to the three towns that line this region’s main entrance to Tonle Sap Lake.
The distance from Siem Reap, is just over 30 kilometers, making it an excursion that can be easily completed in half a day. Compared to traveling to some of the other communities, the river trip and the road trip are rather quick and easy.
From the village to the lake, because the lake is the most important location, a personal ferry service will take you there after passing through the village.
The community relies primarily on fishing and shrimp farming to provide for its members, although during the dry season, they also gather some crops from the land. As Kampong Phluk is a working village, most people who live there are focused on their profession, completely separate from the tourism industry buzzing past their doors.
Local life, it may be interesting to go right past the locals’ houses to get a glimpse of another way of life, but it may also feel quite invasive. As we said earlier, consider that the residents are not involved in the industry, nor do they benefit from it. As a result, there are no general activities that tourists may generally undertake in Kampong Phluk.
A genuine experience, a local guide can guide take you through the mangroves or flooded forest in one of the nearby tiny boats. In addition, a few restaurants are floating, and visiting this area helps the local tourism business in many ways.
Kompong Phluk Floating Village in Dry Season
The end of March to the end of July is a crucial time in Kompong Phluk floating villages, as the water levels start to recede and present a unique opportunity for tourists to experience a new perspective. Although the picturesque landscape of the floating community may lose some of its charm during this time, visitors have a chance to immerse themselves in the daily life of the villagers living in the dried season. While some boats may become stuck, and smaller canoes may be unable to traverse the jungle forest, these challenges add to the thrill of the experience.
The dry season in Kompong Phluk may not be the ideal time to visit for those seeking postcard-perfect photos, but it offers a chance to witness a facet of the village’s daily life that is not typically seen. As they say, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
We encourage travelers to embrace this rare chance to witness a different facet of this incredible destination and truly get a taste of life in Kompong Phluk.
